| What gives us the right to determine what's good and bad about
religious convictions? When did it become a dichotomy of ok and not ok?
Simply because I and fellow Christians believe in a dichotomy of good
and evil at the last judgement and the very simple saving power of
Christ seperating us from the world does NOT mean that we have to
believe in generalizing people's beliefs and insulting them as humans
because they believe in a less 'intelligent' or 'believeable' form of
religion than we do. Nor does it give us the right to deem people's
mentality's as "brainwashed" or "group think" when it comes to beliefs
as a part of that simple dichotomy. Those terms are overly-simplistic
and degrade the human intellect, even as the basest level of education,
and the complexity of the human psyche. There are just as many
brainwashed or group thinking people in mainstream churches as their
are in cults, if you want to define such terms as people blindly
following charismatic or convincing characters, or someone simply
following their family's beliefs. The only reason the terms
'brainwashed' or 'group think' pop up is because when a deviant cult
pops up, society must find ways of coping with the bizarre nature of
the beliefs, and in the process must dehumanize or discredit the
followers by making their actions seem less cognizant or reached as
products of their free will. Especially in terms of beliefs from a
cultural perspective that we are unfamiliar with, this is the easiest
approach rather than coming to an understanding of why or how these
beliefs have become intelligent and founded for those who believe in
them.
Simply
because a group seems potentially threatening to our society's beliefs
and values does not justify our conquering or vanquishing the seemingly
inferior groups. Perhaps if we took a second to step back we could see
that we are equally as threatening to their beliefs they are to ours,
perhaps more so by our sheer numbers. And our sheer numbers is what
gives us the sense of superiority and the supposed "justification" for
"deprogramming" these people and eradicating their beliefs, since the
US wasn't designed for religious freedom or anything. I'm sure glad no
one tried to do that to the Christians... oh wait, they did, and it's
now the largest religion in the freakin world. Christianity started
exactly like some of these cults, including the Branch Davidians, since
Christianity WAS a cult until is became the official religion of the
Roman Empire, and if someone had succeeded in eradicating us like they
had these minor cults, we would never be here. Am I agreeing with these
cult's theologies or beliefs? No! I believe in the exclusive truth of
Jesus Christ as the only Messiah and Son of the Living God in the
Trinitarian sense. But I also believe through history that Christianity
has thrived so because it is the true expression of God's love and hope
for humanity's salvation, and other religions and cults that try to
compete fail, with exceptions. God is making it obvious enough that He
works through us, but not too obvious in that He destroys our free-will
and ability to choose Him.
Maybe we should try and be alittle more
accepting of people who don't believe in the Truth of Christ, just like
our Christ was, so that they may see our love and the hope in us. And
perhaps we could avoid trying to slaughter them for once, though I'd
hate to end a die-hard Western Church tradition...
Sorry...rant over...

| Update update update... Well, I've finally got my work schedule ready, and after HOURS AND HOURS of preperation and work, its set. I am now a proud employee of SHSU again. I worked my first shift at the CAI lab downstairs in the music building, and I must say, its a VERY cushy job. I think I can get used to being paid to sit and do homework. Also, I now teach at Strack JrHigh and as always Huntsville Highschool. Good times. Oh, February 1-3 I'll be playing a musical down in the Woodlands, Gershwin's 'Crazy For You'. (Oh, btw, its a trombone gig, not a voice one) Its cool. Lots of sexy trombone solos. Its the musical with "Someone to Watch over Me" and "I've Got Rhythm". Everyone is required to come see at least one show. Anyway...sorry, I'm just not good at sitting and writing serious journal posts so I believe I'll call it a day. God bless all!
"Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I
am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly
cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who
believes in it will not be disturbed."
(Isaiah 28:16, NASB)
Jesus is that cornerstone, and I have built my life upon Him.
